Inspired #255 - Valeras
Reading duo VALERAS have just released their new single ‘Rita’ - a big indie rock track with some energetic alt-pop tones thrown in for good measure. They took a moment to talk to us about the inspirations behind their music.
Who are your top three musical inspirations and why?
Haim - we love their mix of rock & pop (we love anything they do)
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - their melodies and how they use their instrumentation is mind-blowing, never heard another band that sound like them.
Prince - because he influenced so many artists we listen to and he’s someone we look up to
Is there a certain film that inspires you and why?
Anything by Wes Anderson. The cinematography, colours, set/costumes…it’s all so story-telling. You could pick it all apart individually and still be told an incredible story through that one thing. Also Scott Pilgrim vs. The World because all the music in it has inspired VALERAS since Rose watched it and became obsessed with it.
What city do you find the most inspiring and why?
Liverpool. It’s where we record with our co-writer & producer Tarek Musa. We’re constantly surrounded by musicians and the liveliness of the busy city so we feel our most inspired and creative there.
Who is the most inspiring person to you and why?
Our mothers. The most hard-working, compassionate beings we will ever know. This is your sign to call your mum back
What were your inspirations when writing your new track?
Listening to a lot of “surf-rock”, The Police & being affected by the lockdown. Our new track tells the story of the band when we were going through a big change for us but also speaks of something a lot of people were going through during the uncertain times
How would you like to inspire people?
I think it’s any musician’s dream to want to inspire someone to pick up an instrument. Everyone remembers when they first wanted to play music, what ignited it and how exciting it was. We’d love to be able to do that for someone
