Introducing #145 - Finn Askew
Let us introduce you to Somerset born singer-songwriter Finn Askew, who has just released his new track ‘Cherry Bomb’ - which sees him brewing up an eclectic mix of R&B, jazz, rap and indie. He took a moment to talk to us about his music.
Hey there Finn, how are you?
Yo!! Im doing very well thank you.
So your track ‘Cherry Bomb’ is out now - can you tell us what it is about?
Cherry Bomb is just summer in a nutshell. I wanted to make a song that felt like you were cruising down the road in one of them cars that bop up and down, classic car with that crazy suspension! In general just wanted a head bop song. I made the song a few months back with my guy earl saga and max Wolfgang, it all started with that beautiful piano riff, the sorta ting that gets you hooked straight away. Anyway its the first single off my new EP and I feel like its the bridge which is needed before I really delve into the true Finn askew sound.
You come from Somerset, what is your favoutite thing about living there?
I feel like it’s the sense of freedom you get which you just don’t get from anywhere like the big city. You can really be care free and just live life, live like a kid almost. When I come back from London its so nice to have a place where I can just chill and not have to worry about responsibilities and that.
What do you do for adventures?
I mean it really varies usually just go on long treks and get fucked up in a field. Classic countryside living! Its honestly just some random most of my adventures with the boys re just spontaneous you never really know what you’re gonna get up too in old Wellington lol.
There is quite a mix of genres when it comes to your music, so what are your key influences?
I feel like when I was growing up a lot of my influence came from old rocks bands and indie bands such as The smiths, Nirvana, The kooks, greenday etc. Its what my parents were listening to all through my youth. But I feel as time went by and I started listening to other stuff I really connected with the whole American rap scene so like Lil peep XXXTENTACION, juice wrld, post Malone people like that. So yeah these artists really helped shape my sound but there’s one person who really changed the way I write and thats Frank ocean, listening to him made me realise that what your singing doesn’t need to make sense entirely because to someone it will.
How would to describe your sound to someone who has never listen to your music before?
The sound of the youth.
