Norwegian artist døssi has just released her stunning debut EP ‘bluebirds’, she took a moment to talk to us about memories, how the EP was recorded in her bedroom and the themes behind it.

Hey there døssi, how are you? So your debut EP is out now, how does it feel to have it out there in the world?
Hei! I am doing good, thank you! Ahh this is so exciting, and quite nerve-wrecking. The EP has been ready for quite some time, so it feels like I’ve been keeping a secret I can finally share. It feels really good - and now my birds can finally fly on their own <3

It is called ‘bluebirds’ - what is the meaning behind that?
I have an idea that some memories are like birds. Sometimes lingering on the things in life that makes us sad makes it heavier than letting it go, and letting it fly. That is what I have tried to do with the different stories on the EP - write about it, sing about it and let the stories get their own lives through others while listening to them, so they can finally fly free.

Where was it recorded? Any behind the scenes stories from the creative process you are happy to share with us?
Most of the songs were written and recorded in my bedroom, and later brought to a studio in Bergen called Broen (the bridge).
I had just gotten my new electric guitar when I tried to write something on it - I didn’t think it actually would turn into something releasable, so what started as a song about chicken wings turned out to be the final track of the EP, “behold”. Haha!
I was originally going to record and write most parts of the EP in Broen, but due to the first lockdown I decided to start doing it myself instead of waiting. I don’t think it would have gotten the same sound if corona didn’t happen, and I am very happy I proved for myself that I could make it on my own. That feels really good!

What are the key themes and influences on the EP?
The EP is mainly influenced by my own memories and feelings, but also by people around me. I really love nostalgia - so beautiful! I always try to find beauty in sadness, so that it begins to feel better.

Do you have a favorite lyric on the EP? If so, which one and why?

Hmm, I think it is the chorus of "beloved sun". It’s the most personal song for me - I wrote it while slowly losing a family member to dementia. I wish I could get all her stories before they all faded away slowly. 'When every memory is made undone / and all your stories forever gone / I wish your memories would stick to mind / and let your stories be mine, oh my / for a little while.'

Now the EP is out there - what next for you?

I am working on a new collection! EP? Album? Who knows, but I am sure it will be chapter two of bluebirds, hopefully a bit happier..? Or maybe not, but we will see. I'm looking forward to finishing it! I will also be playing live with my little band. That is what I love the most.
