Inspired #305 - Marcus
Dublin based newcomer Marcus has just released his new EP ‘Not Real’. His new EP has been born of a variety of influences and inspirations over the years. While growing on a diverse mix of everything from early folk artists to modern day hip-hop, Marcus has developed a sound that is distinctly his and looks to bring his eclectic direction to the forefront on this new collection. He took a moment to talk to us about the inspirations behind his music.
Who are your top three musical inspirations and why?
I would say my biggest musical influence is J. Cole. Obviously, our music is quite different but I really respect his work ethic and humble attitude. There is also a real honesty to his work and I think that is something I emulate. I found Maverick Sabre quite inspiring when I was growing up because he was this kid from Ireland making such waves on the international circuit. I would also say Bob Dylan is a musical inspiration of mine because has been around for so long and written so many great songs.
Is there a certain film that inspires you and why?
I watched Whiplash recently and that really put me in the zone. It's about this guy aspiring to be a world-class jazz drummer and depicts the insane pursuit of perfection that accompanies such an ambition. If you haven't checked it out I would definitely recommend it.
What city do you find the most inspiring and why?
Definitely Dublin. It is my hometown and I was born and bred here, but other than that it is just such a beautiful city. So many artists come from Dublin and I think that is a testament to the place. The streets here are filled with art and music.
Who is the most inspiring person to you and why?
I'm inspired by many different people. Whenever I see somebody pursuing their passions, being themselves or acting selflessly it inspires me to do better. I have some friends running independent businesses at the moment and I find that really inspiring. It can be intimidating to start a business so you got to respect it.
What were your inspirations when writing your new EP?
There are a lot of different inspirations behind this EP. Because it's my debut there are songs on it that were written years ago as well as some written quite recently. I can remember writing Obey quite vividly. A lot of my friends had just moved to Australia so I was spending more time by myself. I really threw myself into music. I recorded the guitar loop after work one night and just sat there writing over it. The song is about my first real relationship. I can remember when I wrote Redemption too, it was during the first lockdown. I had just been away with my Mum and brother and I think that inspired the song.
How would you like to inspire people
I would like to inspire people to pursue their passions and to be themselves. I'd also like to let people know that it's never too late to switch lanes in life and do what you really want to do.
