In Conversation With #157 - Porij
Manchester based Porij have just released their hotly tipped debut EP ‘Baby Face’ via their own label Oat Gang Records. Their first release since their ‘Breakfast’ mixtape which came out last year. The debut EP takes the band's influences and manages to create a sound unlike anything else in 2021. Nobody Scared demonstrated a tender side, highlighting the serious and prescient message of the Reclaim The Night movement. Other songs on the EP such as Can't Stop fuse U.K. garage with unshakable pop hooks. Heaven Knows shows their mature side while Divine embraces self-love. Each song effortlessly brings you deeper into the world of Porij. They took a moment to talk to us about how the EP came together.
Hey there Porij, how are you? So your EP is finally here, how does it feel to have it out there in the world?
Surreal. We've had some of these songs in the works for almost 2 years now, so to have them finally come out is really good vibes.
It is called ‘Baby Face’ - can you tell us the meaning behind that?
Beacuse it's our debut EP, we're fresh faced and ready to go. And we all look like children.
Where was it recorded? Any behind the scenes stories from the creative process you are happy to share with us?
The whole EP was recorded in our bedrooms at our student house. We're all producers, so we have our own little setups. Tom records the drums in his room, Jamo mixes the tunes in his room, etc. Tommy took an hour to sing a scale once, that was a long day.
What are the key themes and influences on the EP?
UK dance music with themes of intricacies of relationships, self worth and going round in circles.
Do you have a favorite lyric on the EP? If so, which one and why?
"egg dripping down your face, leaves you satisfied" Because the image it creates is funny. Simple. Effective.
Now the EP is out there, what next for you?
We get to play it live! Loads of shows coming up so get your tickets in. New tunes being made all the time so stay locked.
