Introducing #185 - manic pixie
Let us introduce you to Las Vegas based artist manic pixie - who has just released her track ‘beautiful words’ - a stunning piece of floating bedroom pop. She took a moment to talk to us about her music.
Hey manic pixie, how are you? So your new single ‘beautiful words’ is out now - can you tell us what it is about?
I’m doing really well, thank you! Beautiful words is basically about being unable to confront reality and reverting to escapism. As someone who is outgoing and extroverted, on the outside I’m the last person who would have trouble with confrontation, but I often find myself ignoring things that hurt in favor of living in a daydream.
Where are you based - what are your favorite things to do there?
I’m currently based in Las Vegas. I didn’t always like it, but having a driver’s license definitely changed my whole outlook on my city. As basic as it sounds, there’s a place that sells cheese fries called Potato Corner that is absolutely to die for. I spend a lot of my time driving around and admiring the horizon of city lights.
What are your key influences when it comes to your music?
Currently, I would definitely attribute Billie Marten as a source of a lot of inspiration. Our music doesn’t necessarily sound the same, but I love the whispered, quiet cadence of her voice and have always wanted the ability to emulate it.
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never listened to your music before?
I jokingly said that it sounds like an acapella group is trying really hard to break into indie rock, but I think that genuinely still holds up.
Now the track is out there - what next for you?
Experimentation is at the top of my list! I love the music I make, but I’d love the opportunity to create things that are more raw and emotionally deeper, which can only come from experimentation. I’m still very early into my music career, so I hope everybody sticks around to watch me flourish.
