Introducing #239 - New Town
Emerging from the rain-sodden streets of Glasgow, four-piece New Town relish in an idiosyncratic brand of upbeat indie pop that provides the perfect antithesis to the city from which they hale. We caught up with them to find out a bit more about the band.
Hey guys - how are you? So you've recently released your new single - how does it feel to have it out there in the world?
Yeah we are doing good thanks. It’s been a long two years and a lot has happened in that time for us. This single sort of marks a fresh start for us. At the start of this year we had 3 members of the band leave. This departure reshaped the sound of our music and has allowed us to explore being a guitar band. It’s really good that this song is finally out there, I feel like we have been building up to it for ages and it’s amazing to see it finally become a reality.
It is called ‘Sail Away’ - Can you tell us what it's about?
I think this song to us is about trying to hold onto something or someone you love and care about. Whatever the situation is, the song tells a story about the hard times and the good, but always relates that to the hopefulness in the chorus with love triumphant to everything else.
You are based in Glasgow - what are your favourite things to do there? Where do you go for adventures?
Glasgow is such a diverse city but there is always one common theme. Drinking. Want to hang out with your pals? Drinking. Haven’t seen someone in a few years? Drinking. Someone’s died? Drinking. So it’s probably up there with our favourite past times. In terms of adventures that just depends. Partial to a trip to Malones or if it’s a Thursday, firewater goes a miss.
It's a city with a rich musical history, how has that influenced your music?
I think it’s inspiring to see how well Scottish artists do and Glasgow seems to be the hub for it. I always tend to think that we are the underdogs and it’s always a massive thing when Scottish artists have a successful music career. Its like when you hear someone on holiday speaking in a Scottish accent, you literally can’t help but point out they have a Scottish accent. I think that’s the same for Scottish artists; they are always pointed out for being Scottish. It’s almost like a fairytale.
What are the key influences in your music?
This song definitely took inspiration from the likes of Sam Fender, U2, Kings of Leon and The Snuts. As we continue to write songs we sometimes see these influences shift in a certain direction but we always try to take references from certain artists and what they do well.
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never listened to your music before?
If you like big chorus’, catchy guitar riffs and something you can sing along to then you will love our music. Sail Away has a big summer feel to it.
