Inspired #385 - Marci

Marci – the solo project of TOPS’ Marta Cikojevic, has just presented her debut self-titled album via  Arbutus Records.

Produced by Cikojevic’s TOPS bandmate David Carriere, the songs comprising Marci are thoughtfully arranged, with plenty of space allowing each element to shine independently. Carrierre and Cikojevic approached Marci with the idea that they wanted to craft hits—songs that were catchy and danceable while still being emotionally honest and down-to-earth. The result is a guileless collection of synth pop songs that brim with unabashed sincerity. Marci is about finding catharsis in all its forms, whether it be through a crying session behind closed doors or the euphoria that hits when you hear your favorite song on the radio.

Fresh from playing her headline London show at London’s Laylow - Marci took a moment to talk to us about the inspirations behind her music.

Who are your top three musical inspirations and why?
This is so tough, so i'm going to make it easy on myself and look to my friends:
Sean Nicolaas Savage
Cecile Believe
Mitch Davis
They all possess incredible musical style in song writing, producing, and confidence/power in themselves and their art. They are all so multi-talented and versatile.

Is there a certain film that inspires you and why?
I think ChungKing Express will always be a big one for me. Makes me feel some kind of way. Visually it's so romantic and inspiring, and the storyline is so beautiful and relatable it really left a mark on me that I can still feel when I think about it.

What city do you find the most inspiring and why?
Actually Hong Kong is a beautiful and inspiring city! I watched the movie when I was living there too. The mix between the new and the old, the architecture, the communities/culture, it was such a new experience… also the city reminded me a bit of Blade Runner in the best way.

Who is the most inspiring person to you and why?
I'm always really inspired by my friends. I'd say Jane Penny is one of the most inspiring people i've met. She’s a strong, smart, confident and talented woman who is always there for the people she loves. I often look to her for guidance and feel like i'm always learning from her.

What were your inspirations when writing your new album?
A mix of a lot of things. David and I were looking at catchy pop rock funk music from 80s 90s 2000s and today. I think we were also inspired by each other as we were finding out how we wrote, what our strengths were and how to compliment each skill set.

How would you like to inspire people?
I aim to inspire confidence in others.
