In Conversation With #264 - BLOXX

Last month saw BLOXX release their shiny new EP ‘Modern Day’ via Scruff of the Neck and it is easily their most personal work to date.

Comprising of five glistening indie gems, the four-piece delve into weighted topics as they navigate themselves through mental health struggles and relationship breakdowns to find the light at the end of the tunnel. The EP features previous singles 'Weight In Gold', which explores themes of self-worth in your darkest of times and 'Runaway', a euphoric indie gem that glistens with the upbeat and effervescent sonic footprints we've come to know and love from the London-based quartet, as well as 'Happy Anniversary (To Being Lonely)', a typically upbeat track brimming with effervescent melodies and comeback song 'Television Promises', all alongside the title track.

The band took a moment to talk to us about how EP came together.

Hey there Bloxx - how are you? So your EP is out now - how does it feel to have it out there in the world?
Hey guys! We’re good! Just adulting haha! Yes it is and we’re so stoked! It’s been a long time coming and we hold it quite dear to us. It’s been an exciting time.

It is called ‘Modern Day’ - what is the meaning behind that?
It’s I guess about the Firenze that life is right now, how the world is in flames sorta thing… I guess that’s the best way to sum it up. I think it’s also subconsciously about the trials and tribulations of being an adult and finding it quite difficult.

Where was it recorded? Any behind the scenes stories from the creative process you are happy to share with us?
It was remotely recorded between me (Fee, London) and Rich Turvey in Liverpool and James Dring in East London! We had great times recording it all, firing ideas back and forth so yeah! Good phone calls and studio sessions.

What are the key themes and influences on the EP?
The key themes I think are fear of the world ending/imploding, anxiety, a bit of my own self hatred and our human inability to love ourselves sometimes. I definitely think lead track ‘Modern Day' kind of wraps up the whole thing into one. 'Weight In Gold' is about a conversation I had with family members and it always stuck.
Influences are probably early 2000s. Bit of Avril, little bit of The all American rejects

If the EP could be the soundtrack to any film - which one would it be and why?
Oooo good question.. maybe something from like early 2000s… in fact actually someone said I look like I’m from She’s The Man recently so that one… or like Angus Thongs (that was filmed at the school next door that) .

Do you have a favorite lyric on the EP - if so, which one and why?
I think my favourite lyric right now is “why don’t you love me for something instead of giving me nothing so I can work you out”.
But it’s also “watching headless chickens bake a fucking cake” which is about the classic great British Bake Off.

Now the EP is out there - what next?
Work work work, new new new ;)
