The Band Explains: Model Aeroplanes - 'Whatever Dress Suits You Better'

Scottish Indie-Pop quartet Model Aeroplanes speak to us about the ideas behind  their  Top of The Pops and The Word inspired visuals for playful single, 'Whatever Dress Suits You Better'.
‘Whatever Dress Suits You Better’ is available now as a digital download through Island Records. The band are Ben Buist, Grant Irvine, Kieran Smith and Rory Fleming-Stewart.

Model Aeroplanes Explain:
Where was the video filmed?
It was filmed in our hometown of Dundee, which as we all know is the biggest city in Scotland. We have some friends at the Gardyne College there and we were able to play about with some crazy space technology called Chromatte. It's a big fancy green screen that we didn't really know how to work, but we think it turned out pretty well!

How does the video compliment the song?
Well according to an eight year old in Chicago, it was "Epic because the video looked like the music sounded". We have a friend who's a teacher over there and he thought he'd get some reviews in. That's exactly what we were aiming for with this video so that's good enough for us!

Any behind the scenes stories?
We had a few friends at the college and somehow ended up sitting in Domestic Gas Safety lecture, rinsing a bottle of rum. Stay in school, kids.

Tell us about the ideas/ themes/ imagery used?

To be honest, we just had the idea for a mad psychadelic split-screen video and luckily Bovine, the man behind the camera and computer, is totally on the same wavelength as us. We weren't entirely sure how it was really going to turn out but it ended up being exactly what we were after. We just wanted to make a video that was a bit different and a good fun.

What is the message the video is trying to convey?
Well, the song itself is based on the idea of concealing emotions in plain sight and we wanted the video to do the same by having a clear subject but including warped and contorted visuals. Reality versus surrealism.
