The Band Explains: Callum Pickard & The Third Look - 'June'
Singer-songwriter Callum Pickard talks to us about how his track 'June' came about.
Callum Pickard Explains
Hey, my name is Callum. I front a six piece dream pop band based in Coventry -Callum Pickard & The Third Look. The band consists of Daniel Duveen (Keys/Drums and BV) Daniel Murtagh (Lead Guitar) Michael Webb (Bass) Laurence Pettit (Synths/Acoustic Guitar and BV) Jonathon Pudge (Trumpet and horns) and myself (Guitars/vocals and keys).
‘June’ was written early last year in the middle of a cold and wet Spring. The song is about longing for a season and celebrating achievements. It has heaps of colours, textures and layers along with shimmering dreamy guitars, long sustained Trumpets and French Horns, doubled tracked voices and harmonies. I used a lot of different production techniques on this song, using leads from producers that have inspired me over a number of years.
For the first time, the recording process was split. It started in my home studio, then further tracking was done at a good friends studio set on a beautiful farm in the Midlands. Then a hugely fortunate break gave me the opportunity to collaborate with some truly inspirational people from the other side of the pond. As a result, Brian Joseph (Bon Iver, The Fray, Sufjan Stevens) recorded and engineered the drums for the track (played by Shane Leonard of Kalispell) and CJ Camerieri (Bon Iver, The Staves, YMusic and Paul Simon) also contributed playing the French Horns and Trumpets.
