Live Review: Galactic Empire - Boston Music Room, London 04/10/2017

Star Wars. Metal. Put the two together and what do you get?

Galactic Empire, that’s what. The five-piece band brought comedy and metal to the far, far away reaches of Tufnell Park’s Boston Music Room. Taking to the stage in full imperial regalia, “Dark” Vader led the group through perhaps the most bizarre yet satisfying rendition of John Williams’ Star Wars soundtrack I’ve ever experienced. The dialogue between band and crowd, whilst scripted (come on, do you really want to try talking through one of those masks?), leaves the audience gleaming and truly entertained. They attempt a demonstration of their “Fully operational metal station” that (following the script) inevitably goes wrong, which is quickly followed by the crowd pleaser “Cantina Band”. “Across The Stars” also gets played; an homage to Vader’s “Love for Padmé…. And how much I hate sand”. Laughter isn’t too common at a metal gig but this show has plenty of it.

Shredding their way through the set, Galactic Empire put on a performance that I, and probably many others are likely to remember for a long time. Smiles all round.
