Single Review: Amber Run - 'The Weight'

Back again are the much loved Amber Run with a new song ‘The Weight’. As a personal favourite of mine, I can’t help but expect great things and am definitely not disappointed. This beautiful group has written another song that cannot be missed and that I can barely put words to as it really does speak for itself.

Frontman, Joe Keogh, has graced us with his wonderfully melodious voice yet again with lyrics to pluck at your heart strings and set your player to repeat. He is backed by the rest of the band’s soft voices, echoing his raw notes, simple piano chords and cinematic synths. It’s clear this song’s focus is on the lyrics and the voices, creating the feeling of what it’s like to realise your feelings for someone.

Keogh says “I wrote this song at home, after an argument. It was about a stupid disagreement over something tiny that felt important. There’s a moment after any fight when the heat has passed that you realise how you actually feel. And this song was how I actually felt.

I am never not impressed by this band and highly recommend that you listen to all the songs, that is, if you haven’t already. They tend to worm their way into my late night playlists, I suggest keeping a notebook or a pack of tissues, you will either find yourself endlessly inspired or in need of a good cry.

Don’t worry if you missed their sell out European headline tour in 2017 as Amber run will be performing at some Summer festivals in 2018, such as All Points East, London with The National and The War on Drugs (Saturday, 2 June).

14 April - Zermatt Unplugged, Zermatt, CH
2 June - All Points East, London, UK
17 August - Lowlands Festival, Biddinghuizen, NL
