Calva Louise - 'Tug Of War'
Calva Louise continue with their own special brand of punk-pop-scuzz-rock in their new single, ‘Tug of War’.
‘Tug of War’ sounds like Cyndi Lauper rebelling against her parents by smoking a cigarette or drinking White Lightning in the park whilst retaining her bubble-gum attitude. Jess Allanic sings in an almost baby talk style that fools you into thinking she is precious and fragile. She could be a pop sensation of the 80s. But you would be wrong to assume Calva Louise is anything like that. So wrong.
The frantic opening riff is like an epileptic fit of garage rock noise and anger, and the middle instrumental section sounds like the track is skipping. It’s edgy and keeps your ears pricked. Then the chorus – it’s sing-a-long, dance-a-long and headbang-a-long. This is where Calva Louise’s genius lies, and they execute it perfectly on ‘Tug of War’. Calva Louise are going places, and rightly so.
