DOV - 'Save'
Brooklyn-based, Tel Aviv-born queer artist DOV shares his ambient electronic debut single, ‘Save’ feat. TESHA.
Intuitive and imaginative, DOV’s debut single, ‘Save’ ambiently and eerily encourages its listener to tune into their own inner psyches and pull out their own unapologetic truths. The track is cerebral and vivid, moving with a graceful fluidity through gritty, ghostly fluttering textures. As the song develops, it draws its listener deeper into a hypnotic maze of textures as the song refuses to be rhythmically pinned down.
With TESHA’s siren vocal at the helm, for me, ‘Save’ sonically falls somewhere between Psapp and Cocorosie in terms of contemporaries. Despite its experimentation and the darker aspects of its production, there is a sense of freedom and acceptance in the lyrics as the song delivers an important message in its lyrical theme:
"'Save' is a cry for help - it's a cry for people to COME OUT! We (TESHA and DOV) wrote the song together and both identify as clear queers, our concept and identity centering around coming out. "Save" is about being gay, being queer - it's a spiritual movement about releasing yourself from your past, the house that you grew up in, and from society's never-ending demands and constraining definition of sexual orientation."
‘Save’ aims to leave its listener feeling enlightened and cleansed and while the song has a clear meaning, the song’s lyrics can also be adapted to address any introspective weight or grievance that may be holding someone back, regardless of their sexual identity. A beautiful, warped debut that is peculiar in its charm.
