MAVICA - 'Fire'
Spanish singer-songwriter Marta Casanova aka MAVICA has just released her latest single and visuals for ‘Fire’ from her upcoming debut EP ‘Gone’ due out on Beatnik Creative.
‘Fire’ is about the experience of moving to Berlin and having to deal with a difficult landlord. Marta explains the song as “being strong, finishing what you have to do without giving up even if terrible things happen on the way.” Vocally, MAVICA reminds me of a cross between a melancholy folk artist and Tash Sultana. Her voice contains a sweet, gravelly quality and she has the ability to switch between soft whispers, to almost belting words, with such ease. With influences such as Amy Winehouse, Ben Howard and Bon Iver, you can see where such snippets of vocal inspiration may have come from.
There are many points of perspective that shift throughout ‘Fire’ but it seems as though MAVICA is talking herself through her low points; “sinking like stones, but never deep enough […] I just wanted to heal you on my own.” ‘Fire’ starts off all mellow and stripped back, but slowly builds up with the aid of bass guitar and layered vocals, developing into a lovely folk-pop song that is almost contrasted in mood by the pain that you can hear in Marta’s voice.
If you’re intrigued by the tales of MAVICA’s travels from Spain to London and everywhere in between, keep an eye out for her debut EP ‘Gone’.
