Inspired #0005 - Mikaela Davis
Well June has certainly brought us some lovely summer delights! Mikaela Davis has treated us to her new single 'Other Lover', which is a beautiful snippet of her debut album 'Delivery' which is out in July via Rounder Records.
On top of all of that, she has announce a UK tour for this September.
We had a chat with Mikaela Davis about her key influences as an artist -
Who are you top three musical inspirations and why?
I can’t decide on three so I’ll give you four - Neil Young, John Lennon, Melody Prochet, Harry Nilsson - because they are/were true to themselves as artists and don’t necessarily go for what’s trending.
P.S. Neil is still writing protest songs and is more relevant than ever. he’s my hero.
Is there a certain film that inspires you and why?
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
I looove Kate Winslet and Kirsten Dunst. This role was so different for Jim Carrey, it’s one of my favorite performances of his! The story is really interesting (Charlie Kaufman) - being able to erase certain memories you don’t want anymore. This could be good for trauma victims maybe, though the movie shows how an innovative service could be easily taken advantage of. It’s like an early version of Black Mirror...
I remember the first video I saw directed by Michel Gondry. Sugar Water by Cibo Matto -
My music theory teacher in high school showed the class a bunch of music videos Gondry directed. His visual trickery is pretty astounding and it really shows in Eternal Sunshine. Not to mention the soundtrack was written by Jon Brion who is another fav of mine. All around great peeps in on this movie!!
What city do you find the most inspiring and why?
Rochester, NY.
I may be a little bias, but the musical community really is supportive here. Friends go to every show, bands with opposite genres play together all the time, tons of collaboration... ROC has something special and almost feels like a secret only we know about.
Who is the most inspiring person to you and why?
My mom, ‘cause she has always supported me in whatever I am passionate about. She believed in me pursuing my dream of becoming a harpist after I decided that’s the instrument I would start up in third grade. I don’t know where I’d be without her! Definitely wouldn’t be in this form here on earth.
How would you like to inspire people?
If my songs can relate to your life and help you in some way or another, that’s all I need!
