Make Friends - 'Drop Naked'

Bristol four-piece Make Friends get sensual and tread on dangerous ground in their debut indie pop single, ‘Drop Naked’.

The avant-garde indie pop band from Bristol’s first single is extremely promising. Although ‘Drop Naked’ has melodies reminiscent of Bombay Bicycle Club and Foals, the new single also has a fresh sound to it. With contagious groves and ethereal guitar, Make Friends have created a sublime and independent sound for themselves that I think will set them up for years of success in the music industry.

In the summer of 2018 Make friends headed to Geoff Barrow's Invada Studios, Bristol, where their debut single from the forthcoming EP, due to be released in spring, ‘Drop Naked’ was recorded. There’s a contradictory nature to the single that comes from the overall uplifting sound of of the song whereas the lyrics convey a more somber tone.

Seeming to be about emotional unfaithfulness within a relationship, a topic that although causes a lot of pain, is fairly relatable for many people. The relationship in this case sounds illicit and obviously sexual in nature, due to the title. The lyric “I tell you we should just be friends and you drop naked to the floor” conveys a very human trait of pursuing someone or something that you know is wrong but doing it anyway.

Overall I think Make Friends’ debut single is a huge success with divine melodies and relatable yet painful lyrics. I’m excited to listen to their upcoming EP when it’s released.
