Hobby Club are set to dazzle the indie-pop scene in 2019, as they channel The Smiths and Kate Bush on their debut single, ‘For Maurice’.

The London-based duo consists of Beth Truscott and Joe Rose, with ‘For Maurice’ the first snippet of what is to be expected from their debut EP, ‘Video Days’ on the Manchester label Heist or Hit.

Truscott and Rose’s sound is certainly unique to anything I have heard recently, but their inspirations are clear, especially The Smiths with the Manchester band threaded throughout from the vocals to lead guitar. The lyrics also take on similar themes in brilliantly describing their derelict domesticity in great detail and their longing to escape. They tell this through a local celebrity in Rose’s hometown of Barrow, Maurice G. Flitcroft. ‘Maurice’ was always striving for something more than his humble origins by studying art literature.

In essence, this is a domestic protest song, challenging the small-town mentality and never limiting or changing your ambitions due to your surroundings.

‘For Maurice’ is the first single from their upcoming debut EP ‘Video Days’ out 8th March on Heist or Hit.
