Hot Shorts – ‘My Cat Is Gonna Live Forever’

A rock anthem for cat lovers.

‘My Cat Is Gonna Live Forever’ is the second single from Manchester’s Hot Shorts ahead of their upcoming album I Understand and I Wish to Continue. As you can probably from the title, this is a) an ode to guitarist Chris Killen’s cat; and b) quite funny.

Hot Shorts are by no means a comedy band. This isn’t some sort of Weird Al Yankovich parody. Hot Shorts clearly don’t take themselves too seriously and utilise humour in their song writing. They have executed this perfectly in ‘My Cat…’. The lyrics are funny: “And if you don’t believe me/I don’t really give a fuck about that/Yeah, and neither does my cat/So tell it to her paw cuz her face ain’t listening.” It’s got that grunge angry teen lyrical factor but Hot Shorts put a jokey spin on it. In fact, Killen’s cat meows backing vocals at the 0:55 second mark. And I love it.

Whilst ‘My Cat…’ is a “supposed to sound like one of those second-wave 1995 Nirvana rip-offs,” this is by no means crap or boring. Hot Shorts take the piss, but the riff is cool and easy to get your rocks off too, and there’s a solo too – simple yet effective. Whether the band think it’s a good solo or not, it doesn’t matter. ‘My Cat…’ and Hot Shorts are good laugh and are for serious music lovers, cat lovers, and anyone with the slightest shred of a sense of humour.
