The Band Explains: Dream Nails - 'Corporate Realness'
Well it is certainly exciting to be alive, when you have bands like Dream Nails in the music industry. They take a stand against office work with new single ‘Corporate Realness’, which is their first release on UK indie label Alcopop! Records. We talk to the band about the track, and how it feels to be working with Tom Morello from Rage Against The Machine.
Your new track ‘Corporate Realness’ is out now, can you tell us what the track is about?
This is a song about soul-crushing office work and the bizarrely self-important terms of phrase that only exist at desk jobs. So many of us are living a bleak late-capitalist performance day-in, day-out and this is a song to name it and rage about it! Three people have told us that seeing us play this song live gave them the guts to quit their jobs.
Where was the track recorded? And are there any behind the scenes stories from the recording process that you are happy to share?
We recorded in Liverpool actually, and really found a home there. Apart from having the most jokes time of our lives with our producer, Tarek Musa, we started each day of studio time with a list of affirmations to boost our confidence and focus! A snippet of these has even made it onto the album.
We’re food fixated at the best of times, but in Liverpool we got fucked up on milkshakes and loaded tater tots every day. It can be quite gruelling giving and receiving constructive criticism for fourteen days straight so we gave each other school kid stickers when we did well, saying things like “I tried” or “Good work”. There were a few “Super star!” stickers awarded when someone had really pushed the boat out…
UK indie label Alcopop! Records have just signed you to music family, do you feel at home there? What made you sign to them?
We’ve been long time fans of Alcopop! because they do things in a really thoughtful, interesting way. They released a vinyl for Emperor Yes which had real asteroid dust in it! We also love a lot of the other bands they signed, like the Spook School (RIP), Peaness, Gaffa Tape Sandy and Happy Accidents so it’s awesome to join the family. Jack, who manages the label is such a babe too, it’s just a joy to be working with him.
You have caught the attention of Tom Morello, from Rage Against the Machine, who will be releasing the track in the USA through his own label Firebrand Records. How did that all come about? And how does it feel?
It feels amazing to have someone like Tom Morello, who is absolutely legendary, be excited about what we’re doing. We all grew up listening to rage against the machine! We met because he was opening for Muse in London and did a call out for a choir made up of activists. He loves our message and what we stand for.
After a sold out show at the Old Blue Last, when is the next headline tour?
The album will be released in Spring 2020, so expect some sweaty springtime ragers coming to a town near you. We are bringing witch punk to the people and will leave no stone unturned.
Now the track is out there, what next? What are your plans for the next few months?
We are about to support She Drew The Gun for some of their UK dates! After that, as it’s been a busy year, so we are going to be solely eating pasta and napping for the 6-8 weeks, then we are going to start work on our next Zine that will accompany the album release and get rehearsing to blow the brains out of 2020 with our high octane live shows!
