The Artist Explains: AVES - 'Gem Of The Ocean'
AVES returns after a 6-year silence with blissful indie electronic single, ‘Gem of the Ocean’ (feat. JFDR). We catch up with him about the riveting music video for the single (directed by Harun Güler) which tells a tale of a self-destructive relationship between two boys.
Where was the video for 'Gem of the Ocean' filmed?
Shot on 16mm in Berlin, Germany.
How does the video connect with the song?
It was important for me to visualise the melancholy and the pain in the song in a more aggressive way - having a contrast between the calming voice of JFDR and rough/raw imagery.
Do you have any behind the scenes stories you can share with us?
It is always a pleasure and a privilege to work with highly talented and motivated crew that has the aim to create something unique. Especially the actors clicked with each other so well that it was just exciting to see them perform through the lens.
Could you tell us about the ideas/ themes/ imagery used?
The video was very much inspired by the 90s visual aesthetics revolving around teenage angst and their fear and anger about their life.
Is there a message the video is trying to convey?
In my work I like to evoke confusion at the viewer rather than sending out a certain message. Therefore it was important for me to raise more questions regarding the motivation of the partygoers’ behaviour.
