The Artist Explains: Esmé Patterson - 'Light In Your Window'
Esmé Patterson talks to us about her stylish single and music video, ‘Light In Your Window’, which explores the contradictory feelings of desire for a person , a feeling, a space in time that no longer exists, and the desire to move on.
Where was the video for 'Light In Your Window' filmed?
it was filmed in a wild inter-dimensional space called Invisible City in Denver, Colorado, and in and next to Boulder Creek 💧.
How does the video connect with the song?
The song is about a feeling of being trapped in an emotional space where time moves too slowly, it is a paradoxical space in which you don’t want what you still want, but can’t help wanting it, and the only possible remedy is time itself. I wanted the video to echo this paradoxical feeling, of longing and a little bit of fear, of unrequited desire and otherworldliness.
Can you tell us about the ideas/ themes/ imagery used?
The paradoxical nature of the song and video are based on a Buddhist idea of achieving peace through working towards ridding oneself of “desire”. In this song I long for the end of longing.
My touchstone inspirations for this visual work that I brought to the video director were the painting Christina’s World by Andrew Wyeth, and “meshes of the afternoon” a film by Maya Deren.
Is there a message the video is trying to convey?
I suppose my intention could be expressed well by the “prayer for serenity”: grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, Courage to change the things I can, And wisdom to know the difference.
