Introducing #105 - Bakers Eddy
Let us introduce you to Bakers Eddy, who have just released their youth anthem ‘On My Own’, a track about embracing your inner-introvert. Front man Ciarann Babbington took a moment to talk to us more about the track and how the band came into existence.
Your new track ‘On My Own’ is out now, which you have called a ‘celebration of laziness’, what do you mean by that?
I get into these toxic spirals of feeling down, seeing everyone else living there best 15 second lives on Instagram and feeling worse about myself and then becoming super uninspired. I figured the best way for me to get out of these ruts is to allow myself to feel this way, have off days and be a lazy piece of shit without the guilt. That’s kind of what I mean by a ‘celebration of laziness’. Just to not stress yourself into a dark hole and go ‘fuck it’ I feel like shit, and that’s totally ok.
It was mixed by producer Doug Boehm, who has worked with the likes of Twin Peaks, Girls and Tokyo Police Club, how did that partnership come about and how was the whole experience?
We were hooked up with Doug by our label, Ivy League Records. He’s a super talented dude who has worked on a bunch of great releases. We are all big fans of Twin Peaks in particular so it’s been cool to collaborate and see his vision of the track come to life in its final stages.
We produced the track with Jon Grace, who we’ve been working with pretty much since we arrived in Australia. He always brings out the best (and worst) in us and overall collaborating with Jon and Doug has led us to a release we’re pretty stoked about.
How did the band come into existence?
We all connected early in High School through skateboarding, music and the discovery of pot. I think the original plan was for Jamie and to start this beat box/drum duo and blow up but Ian insisted that a band wasn’t a band without bass or something. So the 3 of us (plus Ed who we kicked out shortly afterwards because he could actually play guitar) wrote some songs and played our end of year assembly. Alex forced his way into the band a year later because he was always there, so it’s been the 4 of us since then.
Your hometown is Melbourne, what do you like to do for kicks there? Is there music of a music scene there? If so where do you go for new music?
Wellington is our hometown but Melbourne is where we’ve been based for the last two years, having said that it’s definitely starting to feel like home to us now that we are part of this awesome music community. Literally any night of the week there is something dope on across multiple suburbs. It’s a little hub for art, easy to do shit in this place.
Now the track is out there, what next?
We’ve got a fun December coming up with the ‘On My Own Tour’ as well as some sick festivals. An EP will be coming out early next year too which we’ve been gagging to realise for a while so stoked about that. We’re also writing the next body of work at the moment which we are super mad about. But yeah, busy boys.
