The Artist Explains: Daniella Mason - 'Woman Lover Powerful'

Daniella Mason talks to us about her empowering single and music video for ‘Woman Lover Powerful’ ,and the importance of celebrating womanhood in all sizes, shapes and forms.

Where was the video for 'Woman Lover Powerful' filmed?
At Studio 615 in Nashville, TN! It was fitting to have a Nashville girl gang there with me.

How does the video connect with the song?

The video tells the deeper story. The fight against what society demands of us. The resistance found in solidarity and community.

Do you have any behind the scenes stories you could share with us?
My favourite part was the camaraderie between the women on set, some of whom had never met until that day. Each one had their takes of dancing by themselves up on a literal pedestal and the room was so full of energy and support. We all were just screaming and cheering for each other and it felt so powerful and emotional.

Is there a message the video is trying to convey?
Most women will tell you that as far back as they can remember, this world has sent messages, both subliminally and obviously, that we are not enough— that we, as women, must always amount to something more; that we can always be doing more, buying more, etc. all to achieve this perfect picture of womanhood that doesn’t exist. Maybe for a long time we were asleep to it. We might have played into it, or bought into it, but now, we are awake, and we’re looking around realising others are awake, too. You’ll notice this video doesn’t tell a lonely tale of a woman scorned. You’ll notice it’s got a lightness, a joy, a camaraderie. That’s because the goal for this video was that, in the end, it would convey hope— that it would convey a way to overcome and overpower the expectations (the mannequin) society places on us, creating an environment of support and love and celebration of our womanhood in all its forms, shapes, sizes, etc. I hope this can be part of the renewing and reprogramming of our minds— to see ourselves in new light, to take off the labels and hindrances and expectations that have been put upon us, to establish a new reality and live in it everyday. There’s only so much they can do if we all decided to live in that world.
