SOAK - 'Valentine Shmalentine'

Bridie Moans-Watson may not be a name that you’re too familiar with, at first glance, but under the stage name SOAK; she is a fully accomplished artist in her own right. She has toured with Chvrches, Tegan and Sara and has also been on Later… with Jools Holland.

Anticipating her second album, which will be released in April, SOAK has released another touchingly honest song which is based around that fateful day that has haunted us all since being in school. ‘Valentine Shmalentine’ was released with a lyric video containing an animation of a phone conversation which goes back and forth with hearts – and while the messages come up with a ‘read’ symbol at the bottom, they are never left on ‘read’ which is the biggest fear and peeve of our generation. With lyrics like; “if a good deed doesn’t earn a post on the internet, is it selflessly meant?” – SOAK makes fun at how open and artificial we can be when it comes to social media. SOAK says that the song was a “result of both giving into hallmark and being a dramatic bitch” and it goes a long way to show that a little honestly and candid humour is always appreciated, especially over a fickle holiday that a lot of people can feel genuine loneliness and anxiety over.

SOAK’s second album ‘Grim Town’ will be released on April 26thvia Rough Trade Records.
