The Duo Explains: Mating Ritual - 'Falling Back'

LA duo Mating Ritual talk to us about the visuals for their idiosyncratic indie pop single, ‘Falling Back’.
’Falling Back’ is the equally blissful yet bleak new single taken from Mating Ritual’s upcoming album, ‘Hot Content’, due for release on May 10th via the band’s own label Smooth Jaws.

Mating Ritual Explains:

Where was the video for 'Falling Back' filmed and how do the visuals connect with the song?
Falling Back’ was filmed in Mount Washington, our neighbourhood in Los Angeles. Although the circumstances of the video and song are different, they’re both about that feeling of being trapped in an unfulfilling cycle.

Do you have any behind the scenes stories you could share with us?
We were initially planning to shoot a video for a different song, but when the director (Nick Kova) got to town, the biggest LA storm in years blew in, so our convertible sun soaked video was scrapped. We came up with this the night before we shot it and got a bunch of friends to help out last minute.

Could you tell us about the ideas/ themes/ imagery used?
We wanted to the feeling of discontent and restlessness, but with a playful edge. By day I am filming music videos and dressing for the job I want, but I can’t escape the reality that my real job is chauffeuring around drunk people. Pretty much an exact metaphor the music industry.

Is there a message the video is trying to convey?
There’s no real message we’re trying to get across. It’s not a “anything is possible” kind of song or video. It’s just telling how it is, and that it may not get better.

What do you hope people take away from watching the vid?

I hope they laugh a bit, we need to be able to laugh at ourselves no matter how restless we might feel, especially if this is the best it’s gonna get.
