Inspired #0023 - CHARLOTTE
CHARLOTTE has just treated us to her debut single ‘I Tell Lies’, which is a fantastic piece of pop music with a hint of soul thrown in. She took a moment to talk to us about Aretha Franklin and her home town of Hull.
Who are your top three musical inspirations and why?
My grandparents for starters. They are a huge reason as to why I fell in love with music in the first place. They were a soul duo and I loved watching them from such a young age.
Aretha Franklin was vocally, in my opinion, the best there’s ever been. She inspired me to not just sing but to work hard to be a technically great singer.
And now it’s a toss up between Otis Redding and Sam Cooke and that’s really unfair. But yeah, old soul music is definitely what has continued to inspire me consistently since I was about 4.
Is there a certain film that inspires you and why?
I can’t think of one specific film that sticks out but I get inspired by British independent films like X+Y, Submarine, Spike Island... there are quite a few.
What city do you find the most inspiring and why?
Funnily enough I think it’s home.. Hull. Nothing is more inspiring than coming home after I’ve been all over the place and just being back where I grew up. It’s really refreshing.
Who is the most inspiring person to you and why?
My mum. I said to her the other day ‘I want to be like you when I grow up’ and I meant every word. I could write a book about how incredible she is, I don’t think there are many things she can’t do, she inspires me every day.
How would you like to inspire people?
I’d love to inspire people to be comfortable in their own skin. I’ve spent far too long wasting precious time battling with my insecurities. I’ve made it my mission now to accept my flaws and move on, I hope others can too.
