GURU – ‘Suntrap’

Brighton punks GURU will blow your mind with their second single ‘Suntrap’.

‘Suntrap’ is filthy from the start. It’s heavy, energetic and rifftastic. Beginning with thunderous drums by Simon ‘Danny Boy’ Daniels, GURU launch into a tasty riff courtesy of guitarist Kieran Hunter and bassist Ferg Belfrage. These boys know how to get your heart pounding and your head banging.

GURU cut into a stripped back verse made up of a simple drum beat and bassline. Tommy Cherrill sings lyrics about social inequality with a stuttering bark that is static and edgy. However, it’s not long before we go back to heavy riffing, just to make sure you’re still listening. Half way through the song, we get to a breakdown that features scratchy noises and bendy chords and notes from the guitar, making you wonder what the hell these guys are up to. You think it’s all over until the outro fires back into the dirty riffing with brutal force which ends abruptly leaving you shell shocked and wanting more.

Despite being a new British band, they probably have more in common with late 70s/early 80s American punk bands such as Dead Kennedys and Black Flag. And that’s awesome. Expect to see more them soon as they embark on a UK tour supporting Lady Bird. Exciting stuff!
