The Clause - 'In My Element'

The Clause are definitely in their element on their swaggering new alternative rock single, ‘In My Element’.

The Clause blend 60s rock n’ roll swagger with the British indie bands of the 90s and 00s. and they do it well. ‘In My Element’ opens with a disco clap fading in and is followed by monstrous and catchy riff based around the 12-bar blues. So that’s the 60s covered. The Stone Roses comes to mind when you really listen to the subtleties the band add throughout the song evoking a throwback to Madchester. For instance, a scratchy John Squire wah guitar is added to the second verse – cool and funky like ‘Fools Gold’.

There are some techno keys included, but that’s just beginning of the techno/disco influence. In the middle, the disco hand claps make a return with a four-on-the-floor drum beat and Nile Rodgers style rhythm guitar. This all followed by a big solo. The Clause keep things simple though – the solo and the entire song is based around the same 12-bar blues riff. The intelligence in the song writing and production is not to make this repetitive and boring. The Clause have done this perfectly.

For those who missed out or just miss the 00s indie revival, then look no further than The Clause. They take that same attitude and formula for song writing and make it contemporary.
