The Band Explains: Swimming With Bears - 'Keep Smiling'
Austin based four-piece Swimming With Bears talk to us about their funky, feel good single and visuals for ‘Keep Smiling’ that might make you think twice about how you treat your waiter or waitress next time you dine out.
How did you decide on the video treatment/visual for the ‘Keep Smiling’ music video?
Director Peter Longno actually came by our band house and went over his treatment plan and concept with us and our manager and we immediately fell in love with the idea! Really bringing to light the struggles of working that part time gig waiting tables while you chase your real dream elsewhere.
How does the video connect with the song?
The video just perfectly depicts what it’s like working in the service industry, from fussy customers to horrible tips, Peter really caught it all on the camera. Plus the video is just fun. The song is fun and upbeat and we needed something that matched the vibe.
Any unforeseen behind the scenes/making-of stories you can share?
The video was filmed at a local diner/restaurant called Shady Grove, a staple of Austin culture. We actually filmed it all in one night from about 9pm to 7am after hours and had to keep sneaking off to the van for some adult beverages off the premises in between shots haha.
Could you tell us more about the ideas/themes used?
The service industry really hits home with us because all of us at some point or another have worked as a waiter or cashier and had to deal with all the usual suspects you’d see as a customer. I think the main idea was to really show how even though we may be having a terrible day or dealing with a terrible table we still put a smile on and keep pushing through the day until we get off work and celebrate a bit.
What do you hope people take away from watching the video?
Escapism. We want people to be uplifted and remember a little distraction can be a good thing. No matter how bad a day you’re having keep smiling and kill em with kindness. It’ll all come back full circle.
