Gold Spectacles - 'Stranger Than You'

Gold Spectacles explore the themes of marginalisation and social resistance on quirky baroque pop song, ‘Stranger Than You’.

Since Autumn 2018, Gold Spectacles have been working on a full moon project seeing them release a song a month in line with the lunar calendar. ‘Stranger Than You’ is the duo’s most recent single, released to coincide with the Harvest Moon last month and marks the penultimate track to feature on Gold Spectacles’ self-titled debut album due for release 15th November.

’Stranger Than You’ is a high quality tune with a classy kick, seeing Gold Spectacles take their listener through a dreamy soundscape of warped spacey synth and off-kilter electronics where flute interludes pleasantly flutter in and out of the track. The core of the song is driven by tight, crunchy, percussive beats and a grooving bass rhythm which provides the track with an infectious pop kick complimenting the hazy, laid back warm female vocal perfectly.

While sonically easy listening, Gold Spectacles hide an important message within the bones of its lively and fun-loving sound as the duo explains:
"‘Stranger Than You’ is about going against the grain in a world full of normal. As we grow up, we are pressured to by society hide our quirks and our individualities. We are encouraged to follow a set path (go to university, get a normal job, buy a house etc). We wrote this song for the alternative route. It’s ok to not be normal. We made artwork to represent keeping your childhood ambitions in sight.”

Through ‘Stranger Than You’ Gold Spectacles cast a glint of light on the darker side of social pressures, delivering a fresh, fun and funky hit of sonic otherness, championing self expression, individualism and making the choices that are right for us.
