Introducing #106 - Izzie Derry
Let us introduce you to folk-rock singer-songwriter Izzie Derry, who has just released a new version of her song ‘Learn To Grow’. She talks to us about living on a boat and working with Grammy Award winning producer Roger Lomas.
You have released a new version of your track ‘Learn To Grow’, what made you want to release it in this way?
I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to do a remix with the incredible Roger Lomas, so I wanted to share it with everyone.
The track sees you’re working with Grammy winning producer Roger Lomas, how did that come about and how was that experience?
I released the first version of ‘Learn To Grow’ back in April, and Roger heard it and got in touch to say he liked it, so then we decided to do a new mix of it. It was really great to hear someone else ideas for the track and to have the opportunity to improve the track.
You are originally from Coventry, but now live in Brighton. What made you decide to move there? Do you miss any parts of Coventry?
I moved to Brighton for Uni, as soon as I visited the city I knew that it was somewhere I wanted to be. The main thing I miss about Coventry is my family, as we’re extremely close, but other than that I guess I miss the awesome music scene and just how close the scene is there. Luckily I go back very often, so I’m still able to be part of it.
What are your favourite things to do in Brighton?
I’m really into food, and I’m also vegan, and Brighton has so many awesome places to eat, so that’s probably one of my favourite things. I also love being by the sea, so running by the beach is also something I enjoy doing. The music scene down here is also really great.
You live on a boat, does it have a name?
Yes, it’s called ‘Just A Star’. I didn’t name it myself, but I like to think it’s pretty fitting. Haha!
The music you create mixes elements of folk, blues, country and rock. Who would you say are your key musical inspirations as an artist?
I grew up listening to artists such as: James Taylor, Melanie and Neil Young, so I guess they were pretty ingrained in me, but more recently I’ve been influenced by artists such as: Ray Lamontagne, Laura Marling and Ben Howard.
Now the track is out there, what are your plans for the next few months?
We’ve just finished an EP that I’ll be releasing in early March, and there might be a cheeky little single in the mean time.
