Inspired #158 - Maggie Lindemann
Maggie Lindemann certainly likes to keep us on our toes, not long since her last track ‘GASLIGHT!’ - she is back with another new song. Named after the famous Tim Burton film, Maggie talks us through what inspired her new track ‘Scissorhands’.
Who are your top three musical inspirations and why?
Gwen Stefani, Avril Lavigne, Hayley Williams. The thing all three of them have in common was they were so themselves. They were edgy and didn’t conform to anything. Gwen was a lead vocalist of an all male ska band at a time where mostly boys were dominating. Avril was a pop girl but kept her edge despite being surrounded by so much of that stereotypical pop stuff. And Hayley is an incredible songwriter and performer, her music gives me a lot of inspiration.
Is there a certain film that inspires you and why?
There’s a lot of movies that inspire me, not just one. I think I draw a lot of aesthetics and creative direction from a lot of different movies. Girl interrupted, Thirteen, Edward Scissorhands obviously lol. there’s so many.
What city do you find the most inspiring and why?
Ah I don’t know. I think different places create a different energy. I’d say probably LA and London just because LA is my home so most of my inspiration comes from here and London because the vibes there are just inspiring. idk haha
Who is the most inspiring person to you and why?
Probably myself haha. My life inspires me, my daily life, my past life, my future. I hate myself sometimes but i’m also super proud of how far i’ve come and reflecting on it all inspires me to want to be better.
What were your inspirations when writing your new track 'Scissorhands'?
The inspiration was the concept behind the tim burton movie, “edward scissorhands.” The movie is so aesthetically beautiful; all pastels and put together, then at the end of the street is this dark old scary castle where an unfinished scared lonely individual lives. He doesn’t fit in and they try to bring him into their world and he can’t even get close to the girl he loves without hurting her. I feel like that concept is so hauntingly beautiful and relatable.
How would you like to inspire people?
To be themselves, to not take shit from anyone, to always strive to be better, to know it’s ok to not be ok sometimes. I hope I just make people feel heard.
