Mallrat – 'Rockstar'

Rising singer-songwriter Mallrat, aka Grace Shaw, shares striking new single ‘Rockstar’.

Set to the soft drama of hazy indie rock with its sludgy guitars and intoxicating basslines, ‘Rockstar’ is the sweet revenge after a bitter breakup. Submissive verses laced with heartache turn into a doe-eyed chorus dripping in honey coated vocals. But it’s when you listen closely, that you can hear the metallic sound of razor-sharp daggers getting ready for the kill. “I wrote the chorus first, it has a completely different attitude on its own, but when you listen in the context of the verses and the really aggressive guitar outro it completely flips the perspective of everything,” Grace says about the track. “When I wrote the rest of the song a year later, I was feeling a lot more sure of myself. It’s interesting how time can reframe things that you still think and are still true but just give them a whole new house to sit in. I’ve always thought of myself as a whisper singer and not even a very good singer, but when I listen to the chorus of ‘Rockstar’ it reminds me that I have more range than I probably even give myself credit for.”

‘Rockstar’ is the first promise of new material from the Brisbane-native. Deep in the process of writing and recording her debut album, Mallrat is about to hit the world with a hurricane of spectacular indie rock.
