Band Of The Week #138 - Lucia & the Best Boys
This week’s Band Of The Week are mystical alternative rockers Lucia & The Best Boys, who have just released their new EP ‘The State Of Things’ via Sweet Jane Recordings. Following on from their ‘Eternity’ EP earlier this year, this collection of songs see the band become more cinematic as they tell tales of heartbreak. They took a moment to talk to us about the release in more depth.
Hey Lucia & the Best Boys, how are you? The EP is out there! How does it feel to be putting out music during this strange time?
It feels actually really good to be finally putting this EP out. I feel like the process has been elongated because of everything going on. They are super personal and I’ve been carrying them around this whole time, so I feel like as soon as it has been released it’ll be a relief and release for me too, to also get closure on everything they are about to me as well.
It is called ‘The State of Things’ - does that hold a certain meaning to you?
I think it’s very ironic that it’s called that during this time, so I feel like it has more than one meaning now but it’s very related to the way I was feeling during the time of writing these songs and I think it’ll be pretty self explanatory to anyone who listened to the EP, as our music usually is!
How does this EP differ from your EP ‘Eternity’ that you released earlier this year?
'Eternity' was where I explored writing about more universal issues and wanted to put the attention of the words onto something other than teenage angst and love, even though there are still love songs on that EP. 'The State of Things' I feel is almost like my version of a diary, and I really used writing songs to figure out how I felt and as a form of therapy too.
This EP feels like it is trying to tell a story, where does this story start? And does it end at any point?
It’s just the true stages of me going through heartbreak and that’s why some songs may sound a little contradicting, but that’s what happens I guess, you feel something one minute and another the next, but I think it definitely is still a storyline of what I experienced.
One of the tracks on the EP - ‘Let Go’ was recorded in LA with Alex Greenwald of Phantom Planet - how did that partnership come together?
We met at a party of July 4th last year and got on so well. He is such a talented and easy person to work with and made it really easy for me to open up to him whilst recording ‘Let Go’ as we spoke a lot about where I was at and why I was writing it.
What are the key themes and influences on the EP?
I think there is no specific theme, these songs are all demos that I created with different people, we didn’t get the chance to go in and record them this year and so we put out the demos and I think they all have their own feeling. Inspiration wise, I love Stevie Nicks and Madonna I and I love when the influences shine through because it’s like an ode to them.
Do you have a favorite lyric on the EP? If so, which one and why?
I think my favourite lyric is in ‘Perfectly Untrue’ when it says ‘ days go by but I don’t feel better will you live in my mind forever’ because that was the one that really clicks with me and I still remember feeling that was because it really did go on for days.
Now the EP is out there - what next?
It’s a surprise!
