Emanuel – 'Black Woman'
Rising singer songwriter Emanuel shares jaw-dropping new single ‘Black Woman’.
Inspired by conversations about civil rights history and Black history, ‘Black Woman’ talks about “the resilience, empowerment and beauty of black women.” To a gentle soundscape of intricate finger picking and beautifully emotive melody lines, Emanuel’s soulful vocals take on a lamenting tone. There is a pain in his voice that takes form in expressive lyricism – “Black woman sometimes, sad woman all of the time. She’s a Queen from another place, why are you so misplaced?” ‘Black Woman’ is in every way extraordinary: from the remarkable sense of honest vulnerability woven into Emanuel’s words to the swelling strings that mark the poignant end of the track. But above all, ‘Black Woman’ is extremely relevant. Talking about the track, Emanuel explains: “People might think this song was written as a response to the moment right now but the beauty of it is that it was saying something when it was written a year ago and it’s still saying the exact same thing – ‘I see you, I recognize you, I appreciate you and I love you’ – it was me saying that to black women and I think the same thing stands and I think the same exact message is needed.”
Emanuel’s Artist Manifesto is all about the renaissance of black art and music as a form of healing. With ‘Black Woman’, he is giving the world something to think about, to reflect on, to fight for.
