Manchester’s most promising bedroom-pop talent Lucy Deakin has just released her new EP ‘i got bored’ - which has a bold nineties aesthetic that tells the tale of romance through the early internet world. Lucy took a moment to talk to us about the inspirations behind her music.

Who are your top three musical inspirations?
Miley Cyrus always has been and always will be my no. 1! I love how bold, empowering and confident she is and how she manages to reinvent herself for every era. She is literally the definition of an ICON. Charli XCX is amazing with how progressive and ‘future-y’ her music is - plus how she writes and has creative control of all of her material. And then I love how confident and focused Dua Lipa is with her music - how she reinvented herself with ‘Future Nostalgia’ was amazing.

Is there a certain film that inspires you?
Clueless was a massive inspiration for the aesthetic and styling of the ‘i got bored’ campaign - from the grainy, nostalgic look of the film to the iconic outfits. I loved it growing up and was super keen to incorporate the vibe into the look and design for the videos on this EP!

What city do you find the most inspiring?
I love cities where it feels like there is lots going on cause it’s super inspiring it makes me want to work harder! London is definitely my favourite city in the UK for that reason, but it’s a dream of mine to move to LA one day because it's super busy but also is super sunny!

Who is the most inspiring person to you?
I’ve already mentioned her as a musical inspiration, but Miley Cyrus is without a doubt my biggest inspiration in every way. Throughout her career she has used her position to help and inspire others, being a massive advocate for social and political change! Her creative attitude of just doing whatever she wants for each project, but always doing it 100%, is super super inspiring to me.

What were your inspirations when writing your new EP?
Charli XCX and Kim Petras inspired a lot of the future pop flavours on the new EP, ‘inmyhead’ could’ve ended up as a ballad if not for the influence of these artists! Super confident and bold pop stars like Ariana Grande, Dua Lipa, Miley Cyrus & Selena Gomez made up the majority of my listening while working on the EP too - I think that kind of confidence shows on ‘bad in love’!

How would you like to inspire people?
Like how Miley inspired me, I want to encourage people to be whoever they want to be and believe in themselves 100%! *cue Believe by Cher*
