monmoi - 'fleeting'
London based monmoi shares lo-fi pop with hints of chillwave and synthwave on dreamy new single, ‘fleeting’.
monmoi is the solo project of George David who has been making good use of his extra time in lockdown by creating lo fi pop recorded predominately in his kitchen between the hours of 5:30am and 9 am, ‘fleeting’ is monmoi’s latest release.
Written and recorded over the space of 3 mornings, there’s a natural fluidity to the track that builds on the gentle buoyancy of looped beats. ‘fleeting’ is mostly sparse, moody and laidback seeing monmoi allow his washed out vocal to lead the song with its poignant lyrics. This adds emotional depth to contrast the quirks to the track’s subtly textured production. Yet the track does layer with magical harmonies and lush synth textures, blanketing the song in reverie.
”fleeting is a song in which I threw all my creativity into and had an amazing time creating. It's different to my other releases, it has more depth and I experimented with soundscapes and producing some unique sounds to complete the mix.” monmoi explains. “It still has the monmoi flourishes to it with a lot of harmonised vocals at the end. I wanted to challenge myself with this release and I think I did that, and I honestly think I created a song that will appeal to a lot of people.”
Here, monmoi perfectly captures the quiet moments of morning reflection when you move from the dark solitude of the night to meet dawn head on. It’s a peculiar and potent soundtrack to holding on to sanity when things start falling apart. Has kitchen pop ever sounded so good?
