Inspired #184 - spill tab
Emerging Los Angeles based, French-Korean artist spill tab has been capturing our attention with her unique brand of bedroom-pop - she finishes off the year with the release of her debut EP ‘Oatmilk’. Armed with moody, late night jams, spill tab took a moment to talk to us about the inspirations behind her music.
Who are your top three musical inspirations?
Moses Sumney, he’s just an absolute musical and creative beast. Everything from his songs down to how he runs his live shows is inspiring to me. Charlotte Day Wilson too, she does it all man, sings, writes, produces. Being that versatile is something I'm always aspiring to be. I'm also a huge Bon Iver fan, it's so fascinating hearing him talk about how he creates his music.
Is there a certain film that inspires you?
Not really anything in particular, but I did just recently watch that crazy Nic Cage movie 'Mandy' directed by Panos Cosmatos. The coloring is fucking insane and the entire vibe is so spooky but ethereal. I've been thinking about it a lot, I'd love to have a music video look like that one day...
What city do you find the most inspiring?
I feel most comfortable in LA - I grew up here and a lot of my friends are also based here now. I think having that community inspires me to work hard because my homies are so talented and straight grinding.
Who is the most inspiring person to you?
This is some corny obvious answer but definitely my mom. We moved around a lot growing up, and we've both gone through really hard losses of friends and family, but she has never stopped fighting and working to give me the best life. I have so much respect and admiration for my mom. I'm deadass tearing up writing this.
What were your inspirations when writing your debut EP?
Just to have fun, be exciting, and to be excited about experimenting. And to create a space to go stupid in and have a good time.
How would you like to inspire people?
This year has been especially grueling, and music and friends were sort of the beacon of light in the waters of pure chaos. I really want the spill tab project to be something positive, fun and interesting, and to create a vibe that's accessible and that people feel they can hang out with.
