Inspired #83 - Soleima
Danish artist Soleima has just released her new single ‘Roses’, the lead track from her debut album ‘Powerslide’ which is due out on March 12th. She took a moment to talk to us about the track and all things that inspire her.
Who are you top three musical inspiration?
That’s always a hard one - I feel inspired by many different artists all the time. I grew up listening to a lot of old school hip-hop like Wutang, People Under The Stairs, The Pharcyde, etc., so that is definitely something there had an impact on me.
The Beatles also inspired me a ton. I know it’s such a cliché to choose them, but that is just how it’s got to be :). Now I listen a lot to this girl called 070shake. It is super emotional and very melodic auto tune hip-hop. She is someone I am super inspired by right now.
Is there a certain film that inspires you and why?
Just after I saw ‘Call Me By Your Name’ last year I wrote a song inspired by the film with the same title. It’s the first time I have ever been that directly inspired by a movie, and I wanted to capture the emotion from the film and reinterpret it into a song.
What city do you find the most inspiring and why?
I am actually writing mainly in Copenhagen right now. I have a wonderful studio there and I love working in the city.
Who is the most inspiring person to you and why?
Hahaha, that is an impossible question! I am inspired by so many people. I would say that people in my life in general are a big inspiration for me; my friends, boyfriend, family. All the emotions affect me and inspire me to write me songs.
What were your inspirations when writing the track?
I was coming out of a period in my life where I hadn’t listened to myself enough. I had tried musically to do a lot of things that weren’t feeling honest, and needed to come back to something more true. In that way, it is very much a song about putting up boundaries and remembering self-love, always.
How would you like to inspire people?
To me the most important thing is that people feel something when they hear my songs. The worst thing would be if people didn’t feel anything when they heard my music, I would actually rather that they hate it :)
