Inspired #86 - Fletcher Gull
Australian artist Fletcher Gull has just dropped his new single ‘Deciduo’, he took a moment to talk to us about Bob Dylan, Don Hetzfeldt and the inspiration behind the track.
Who are you top three musical inspirations?
Bob Dylan because I don't know anyone who can convey an idea through song as well as him.
Frederic Chopin because if somebody's musicality comes from a divine power it's surely his. His chord and melody progressions make my soul wilt and my mind boggle.
Alex G for his absolute bravery (at least I consider it brave) to write gorgeous pieces of art with disregard for the nagging voice of the music industry saying things like "this song needs a chorus, don't release so many albums, this isn't radio friendly etc" and absolutely killing it. Dude inspired the shit out of me to bring it back to basics and stop having anxiety when people don't think my music is "accessible" enough.
Is there a certain film that inspires you?
'It's Such A Beautiful Day' by Don Hertzfeldt has to be my favourite. Watching it is like going through death and rebirth every time, I can't believe how amazing it is honestly. Doesn't inspire me to make music as much as it does to just be alive.
What city do you find the most inspiring?
Cities are exciting at first and then turn bleak after a little while for me, so they're all pretty much the same. You get there, write some "hey, I love it here!" songs then get into a routine and write some claustrophobic depressed songs, at that point I normally go somewhere completely different.
Who is the most inspiring person to you?
Brian Greene. The man's way of looking at the world paired with his ability to articulate it is the kind of thing that makes you stand up and change your career and your perception of reality.
What were your inspirations when writing the track?
A tree near my dad's house outside of Wollongong.
How would you like to inspire people?
Ummm well, I'd like a girlfriend. Maybe I can inspire someone to see something worthwhile in me. Life is lonely ya know, that's why we play music and write plays and invent languages in the first place, we wanna be close to others... But if not who cares, it's all fun and games.
