The Band Explains: St. Buryan – ‘Tell Me’
We have chatted to Rhys Melhuish, a fifth of the North East band St. Buryan on their emo-pop ballad ‘Tell Me’ as well as the unique visuals behind the electric new single.
Where was the video for ’Tell Me' filmed?
It was filmed in my living room, I’ve got a large white wall across the back of the room and we thought it would make a nice, clean background to film over. Moving the settee out of the way was a challenge, mind!
How does the video connect with the song?
The main vocal ‘hook’ that people tend to pick up is the “telephone” line in the chorus. We came up with the idea of using a phone throughout the video, as if we were playing the song down the phone to someone. We thought about using an iPhone originally, but then found the blue ‘vintage’ phone online, so we bought that and went with it!
Do you have any behind the scenes stories you can share with us?
There isn’t really anything to tell from behind the scenes, pretty much every idea using as many blue props that I could find in the house ended up being recorded and used in the video. The whole thing was properly daft, but it was a lot of fun to put together.
Could you tell us about the ideas/themes/ imagery used?
As everyone who follows our socials will have realised, we went in hard with the blue colour as our “theme” for this single. The artwork was blue, the phone we found was blue, so we went from there to make everything else blue too. Our clothes in the video (and press shots), the props throughout the video (a sledge, a toothbrush, a towel, a lighter, a bowl etc.) - all of it was blue. We wanted to make a video that looked equally slick and silly, that would make people chuckle that little bit more while enjoying the track. And I think we’ve nailed it. Massive shout-out to our own Nathan Gooch (guitar/vocals) who edited the whole thing himself too.
