Album Review: Joywave - ‘Possessions’

It’s hard to know what to make of Joywave, or what to expect from them. They supported Bastille on their North American tour last year and come across quite kooky but their third studio album ‘Possessions’ begins with ‘Like A Kennedy’. It’s so sincere, heartfelt and earnest and in complete contrast with some of the other tracks on the album which are more fun and energetic. ‘Coming Apart’ bursts into sound and further explores frontman Daniel Armbruster’s internal monologue. It’s an epic tune.

‘Half Your Age’ is the perfect high energy anthem to accompany your existential crisis. It’s quite a bop, with clever lyrics! The title track ‘Possession’  is mesmerising and a highlight of the album. It’s quite experimental in style, like the other 11 tracks on the album, and is catchy with a hypnotic chorus. It’s about having dreams even when things don’t work out the way you had planned.

Joywave are bringing a fresh new sound with ‘Possessions’. It’s a great listen whether you’ve followed them on their career or are just being introduced to their quirky indie pop sound.
