Nordic duo When ‘Airy Met Fairy’ release their latest single, a mesmerising cover of Rufus Wainwright’s protest song ‘Going to a Town’ that is now just as relevant as it was in 2007 and gives a voice to ever-present frustrations.

“I’m going to a town that has already been burnt down. I’m going to a place that has already been disgraced. I’m going to see some folks who have already been let down. I’m so tired of you America.” The opening verse hits as hard as ever, speaking a truth that is emphasised by vocalist Thorunn Egilsdottir‘s melancholic tone quietly grieving the current state of affairs and political decline of a country.

When ‘Airy Met Fairy’ transport the track into the new decade by giving it a new coat of colour. Altering the soundscape ever so slightly, this new version is slower, somehow darker, a little gloomier and more urgent in delivering its message of resentment. While Wainwright seems to remain hopeful with his choir of angels, When ‘Airy Met Fairy end the song on a haunting note that doesn’t leave much room for optimism.

‘Going to a Town’ is released in the runup to their sophomore album ‘Esprit De Corps‘ – so, while the world is slowly losing its head, there remains something to look forward to.
