Scottish singer songwriter Aaron Smith created quite the impact last year when his debut EP amassed around twenty-nine million streams. He is back with something fresh for our ears with new single ‘Brother - a track with a beautiful impact despite it’s simplistic structure, touching on the subject of addiction. Aaron Smith took a moment to talk to us about the track.

So, your new single ‘Brother’ is out now, how does it feel?
Yeah it’s amazing to finally get it out there, it’s a song I’ve been sitting on for a while now so I’m glad that its out now for everyone to hear. It’s a track that I feel like I can connect with very well and it sends out a strong message so I’m proud of that.

It’s your first single since your EP ‘Loveless’, do you feel you have changed since it’s release?
I would say so yeah, Loveless for me was a good start for me but I feel like I have more to give. This whole process of finding my feet as a musician and crafting my sound is exciting so it’s nice to feel like I’m growing with each release.

What is the track about?
For me the track is about someone who is trapped in their own addictions and consumed by their thoughts to the point where they can’t live anymore. It is quite a heavy song but I think it has a strong message behind it that is important to address. The track has some personal meaning to me but as I say about all my songs, if someone can take away their own meaning of the song and find comfort when listening to it then that’s amazing!

Where was it recorded? Can you share with us any behind the scenes stories from the recording process?
So we started recording it in Wales with Ed Tullett at his house which was an amazing experience (he’s an utter legend) then we finished it off with my friend Joe Rubel who produced the Loveless EP.
I wrote Brother with Ollie Green and Ed Tullett at the Spotify studios in London. I had been asking for months to write with Ed as I’ve looked up to his art for quite some time now so it was amazing to be able to write with him and Ollie on this track and achieve a track that I really love.

What do you hope your listeners take from your song?
I would want them to think after listening to the song that there are people to listen to your stories and that if you are struggling with anything then to speak up. I always just want anyone listening to my music to connect with the song in their own way and relate it to their own experiences in life, to them the song could be about anything. I think that’s a really nice way to look at music as not everyone goes through the same experiences.

Now the single is out there, what next?
I’ve been working on loads more music and have another EP ready so I’m excited to put that out there. The worlds a bit of a weird place right now but we’ve all just got to stick together and push through. We’ve just got to take each day as it comes, with everything getting cancelled and postponed it is a bit gutting but I’m hopeful to be back out touring again at the end of the year.
