Freya Ward - 'You Could Be My Sanctuary'
Freya Ward offers a lesson in accountability and emotional maturity on beautiful indie folk single, ‘You Could Be My Sanctuary’.
‘You Could Be My Sanctuary’ is the first of three lovely singles Freya Ward will be releasing over Spring/Summer of this year. Produced by Matthew Lowe, ‘You Could Be My Sanctuary’ is a minimal track that leaves a lot of breathing room without ever faltering. Ward’s hushed vocal instantly sets her listener at ease, delving into touching note-to self storytelling that serves as, “a reminder to curtail your impulse, when that impulse might be impatience, and a reflection on the current no-filter culture.’
Wistful fingerpicking opens the track, providing a tranquil and magical driving rhythm, providing a gentle and reassuring backbone to Ward’s warning to think twice before using words as weapons. Whilst Ward’s vocal is steady and there’s a lightness to some of the instrumentation that reminds me of City and Colour in parts, the track is also turbulent, seeing buoyant percussive rhythms make their presence known at its most moody. A weighty contrast to the freedom found in the electric guitar-work that flitters in and out of the track offering a gorgeous call and response to Ward’s intimate lyrics, “You could be my sanctuary”
’You Could Be My Sanctuary’ is a deeply stirring song with real emotional depth that makes you consider what kind of person you want to be, and shows that it’s never too late to grow or lean from past mistakes. It’s a startlingly eye-opening cut that would sit nicely on your playlist in between Daughter and Lucy Rose.
