Introducing #139 - Kid Sistr
Let us introduce you to New York indie trio Kid Sistr, who have just released their latest single ‘Little Sister Song’ - a high spirited track dedicate to younger siblings and rom-com teenager-dom. The band took a moment to talk to us about the track and how the band came together.
So, firstly who are you?
Kid Sistr = Sabel (guitarist and vocalist) + Sara Keden (bassist and vocalist) + Rebecca Webster (drummer).
Where are you from and what is it famous for?
Sabel is from Nyack, NY. Rebecca and Sara are from Fairfield County Connecticut. Both places are famous for being: “near the city,”. We joke about that, but living near New York City was important for all of us. Our proximity gave us access to the NYC music scene and allowed us to see our favorite bands in concert while we were growing up.
How did you all meet?
Rebecca and Sara met in middle school at an extracurricular program called School of Rock. Together, they played Led Zeppelin and went through puberty. Then, Sara met Sabel when they entered the same undergraduate program at University of Miami’s Frost School of Music. Sabel eventually wanted to hire an all girl band for a hometown show in Nyack, so Sara gave Rebecca a call. The musical chemistry at that show was undeniable, so we decided to continue to work together in a collaborative context.
Who would you say are your key musical influences when it comes to your sound?
We have countless musical influences pooled between the three of us, but they all intersect at pop and new wave music. We love great pop music: Lady Gaga, Billie Eilish, Harry Styles, Julia Michaels, OG Katy Perry, MUNA, Dua Lipa. There is so much to learn from pop songwriting; pop songs are literally designed to get stuck in the listener’s head, and that’s precisely what we want to do with our music. We love new wave too: The Police, Blondie, Talking Heads, Pretenders, The Bangles. Again, phenomenal songwriting, but these groups also possess a charming weirdness in composition and sound that we really adore.
Your track ‘Little Sister Song’ is out now. Can you tell us what the track is about?
All three of us are the oldest children in all-sister families. We feel that the experience of sisterhood has shaped each of our personalities, so we wanted to pay tribute to it. We also wanted to capture what growing up is like for girls. When a young girl’s body changes, people around her often start to treat her like she’s an adult when she’s still just a kid. We’ve been through it and we’ve seen it happen to our sisters and friends; it’s a challenging experience to endure. That being said, ‘Little Sister Song’ is super lighthearted and humorous. As much as growing up is uncomfortable, it’s also hilarious, and we wanted to make sure we conveyed that in ‘Little Sister Song’.
It is the debut track off your debut EP, how is that coming along? When do we get to hear it
We are ecstatic to have completed our debut self-titled EP at an incredible spot called Happy Camper Studios in Nashville TN. The staff at Happy Camper is made up of our close friends from college. We’ve all known each other for a long time, so we understand each other’s abilities and preferences. The full EP, Kid Sistr, will be available for streaming and download on all digital platforms on June 26th, 2020.
