Will Joseph Cook – 'Driverless Cars'

Twenty-two year-old Will Joseph Cook gives voice to a very contemporary kind of problem in new single ‘Driverless Cars‘.

‘Driverless Cars’ is impressively self-aware, though talking about a serious topic, it does so in a way that feels almost self-depreciating. At first listen, it’s fun: With bubbly rhythms and a catchy to no-end hook-heavy chorus, Will has crafted a song that is hard to forget. But when you dive a little deeper into the lyrics, it’s actually quite heavy - “I don’t know what I want, so I walk into the dark. I feel like one of those things, those driverless cars.”

Talking about the inspiration behind the track, Will reveals: “‘Driverless Cars’ was a very dumb, literal way of trying to express a lack of control and clear direction in my life. Surrendering to the fact that a lot of what happens to us is out of our control. For me at least, that was a really uncomfortable and difficult thing to process.“  He continues: “I wrote ‘Driverless Cars’ after a late-night walk, the title lyric kind of just popped out when I was singing the melody. It made me laugh because it was such a contemporary way of describing a very contemporary feeling.” And he’s right. ‘Driverless Cars’ perfectly captures the tendency we have to more or less laugh off our problems. We’re a depressed generation, what are you gonna do except make the best of it?
