Let us introduce you to Lo Lauren, who has just released her debut track ‘Just Friends’ - which sees her music breaking away from the typical pop mould. Lo Lauren took a moment to talk to us about BRIT school, and the meaning behind her debut single.

Hey Lo, how are you?
Hey! I'm good thank you, bit of a crazy world right now but trying to stay as positive as poss! You?

Your debut track - ‘Just Friends’ is out now, can you tell us what it is about?
So I wrote this a couple years ago with a producer called KIN - it went through a lot of rewrites before the final version but essentially the song is a brutal confession. It's very literal and honest and talks about that moment when you realise you need to cut someone out of your life to fully get over them... you can't pretend you're JUST friends cos it will always be more than that.

How do you feel it showcases your music as an artist?
I think its a nice landing point for me to build from - it's a bit moody and the production is very cool but minimal - so allows space for the lyrics to hopefully connect with people. I want everything to grow naturally and so didn't want to go in too heavy with production or crazy concepts too soon.. but I will get there haha!

You started out studying at the Brit school, how was that experience?
It was sick! BRIT for me was amazing because it was there that I wrote & recorded my first song. I realised there that I could combine everything I love (performing, singing, creating, writing) by becoming an artist. I also came from quite a strict secondary school and BRIT was the complete opposite so it really encouraged my creative side.

Having written a number of songs with the likes of Call Me Loop, Blithe, Hannah Jane Lewis and more, what made you want to reach out on your own?
The plan was always to release music myself, I just wanted to nurture my skills as a writer and become really confident in it first, as I only really started writing at 17! It was so fun writing for amazing girls like those and I still do sometimes...there's nothing better than collaborating with fellow artists & I've loved everyone I've worked with so far.

You are based in London, what are your favorite things to do there?
I go to the studio in Soho most days - I love the drama of it, the hustle, the bars, the ridiculously overpriced coffee shops. Just motivates me every day to get shit poppin!
